Tourism minister backs move to attract stargazing travellers

Tourism Minister Matt Doocey has voiced his support of Dark Sky tourism, citing the appeal to international visitors and the associated economic benefits. Read the full article on Stuff here  

Tourism NZ’s research shows more than 70% of people thinking about visiting New Zealand were interested in stargazing. The potential to attract visitors during the off-peak and shoulder seasons, frequently the best time for star gazing, was also noted.

Destination Wairarapa is working hard to maximise the benefits gained by the region’s international status as a Dark Sky Reserve. Product development and promotion of our Dark Sky are key tenants of Wairarapa’s Destination Management Plan. An exciting and diverse range of experiences, events and collaborations are being developed by operators, and these are receiving support and guidance from Chrissy Cummings, Destination Wairarapa’s product development manager.
