Walking in the dark with the Wairarapa Walking Festival

The Wairarapa Walking Festival now in its 6th year is once again showcasing exploring the region on foot. This year there are two fabulous opportunities to go walking in the dark!

Pukaha after dark - Wednesday 11th November

As evening settles over the forest, head out along Pūkaha’s Loop Track, normally only accessible during the day, and make your way to the top of the reserve.
Along the way, experience the changing sights and sounds of the ngahere as daylight fades and the forest comes alive at night.

At the top, pause to enjoy a warming kawakawa tea and light snack before beginning the return journey under the night sky.
The experience will also include a short presentation exploring Pūkaha, our connection to the ngahere and the importance of protecting our dark skies.

Walk into the Dark - Friday 13th November

As we walk together, the transition from dusk to dark will naturally unfold, helping us acclimatise to the night. This is less about distance and more about slowing down and embracing the quiet and calm of this natural transition.

Along the way, we’ll reflect on the value of darkness - its role in history, its impact on wellbeing, and its importance for the environment. As othe walk come to an end we can look up in awe at a canopy of stars.
