Rocks from Space

Wairarapa Dark Sky Association host Jonti Horner. Professor (Astrophysics) at the Centre for Astrophysics University of Southern Queensland to talk about Space Rocks.

In February 2013, a spectacular flash of light was seen in the sky over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The explosion, and shockwave that followed, injured more than a thousand people, and damaged thousands of buildings.

The culprit? A rock from space - a pile of rubble less than twenty metres in diameter, and the biggest impactor on the Earth in the last century. The event was a striking reminder that Earth is a target in the celestial shooting gallery - and that we will be struck again.

But what's the story? What threat do such objects pose to life on Earth? Where do they come from? And is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?

To learn more, come and join Jonti Horner for a discussion of the threat posed by 'Rocks From Space'.

This is a FREE event held at The Royal Hotel, Featherston on Wednesday 20th May at 6.30pm.
